FOUR REGULATIVE PRINCIPLES OF SPIRITUAL LIFE

Bhakti Yoga is easily performed by the sincere and determined seeker of the Truth and ultimately transports one in their original spiritual identity to the perfect and eternal spiritual world of ever-increasing loving relationships.

FOUR REGULATIVE PRINCIPLES OF SPIRITUAL LIFE

In order to make progress on the path of perfection, I must regulate and purify my life and activities by ceasing certain activities and adding others. By so doing, my consciousness will become purified and I will be able to realize truth that is now hidden from me and that I am not currently equipped to realize.

Everyone born within the material universe is compelled to act with four glaring defects which contribute to blocking one from understanding spiritual reality:

1. Imperfect senses

2. Propensity to cheat

3. Making mistakes

4. Being illusioned

Handicapped by these defects, I fall further from pure consciousness by breaking the four regulative principles of spiritual life:

1. No eating of meat, fish, or eggs

2. No taking of intoxicants

3. No illicit sex

4. No gambling

It is very unfortunate that in the world today, breaking the four regulative principles is embraced by so many as favored activities of life. This simply degrades human consciousness and results in further sinful activities and reactions of material nature in the form of increasing natural disasters and personal suffering.

My sinful desires increase by breaking these regulations, and I am forced to accept the ensuing karmic reactions. My addiction to these activities increases, plunging me deeper and deeper into the material ocean of suffering and misery and into lower and lower forms or species of life.

Drinking, taking drugs, having affairs, gambling, killing and eating animals, are all glorified in the movies, in social media, and amongst each other. Not understanding the high price that we pay for these degraded activities, we live our human lives like animals instead of realizing the extreme rarity of the human form.

We must use this opportunity of human life to develop our consciousness and escape from the bondage of material desires and karmic reaction which life after life simply ends in the pain of death.

By hearing the transcendental message and receiving and chanting the Holy Names, I will begin to understand that I am an eternal person, temporarily in this material body, and that my happiness can only be found in loving and serving the Supreme All Attractive Person (Krishna). The positive and purifying spiritual practices which I have added to my life will destroy all attraction for engaging in the above four activities and gradually give me immunity from the four defects.

When I make some progress, I naturally follow these four regulative principles because I am no longer attracted by these activities. My consciousness has changed.

In other words, to break free from the prison of repeated birth and death, my unlimited material desires and attachments must gradually be transformed into spiritual desires and attachments by following the purifying and satisfying process of Bhakti Yoga.

Bhakti Yoga is easily performed by the sincere and determined seeker of the Truth and ultimately transports one in their original spiritual identity to the perfect and eternal spiritual world of ever-increasing loving relationships.

The most basic platform from which I can begin to make progress clearing my consciousness of the grossest type of materialistic conditioning is by hearing and repeating transcendental yoga sound. By so doing, my understanding of spiritual principles and truth will increase and then my conviction and determination to make progress on the spiritual path becomes stronger.

Simply following the four regulative principles will not deliver love for the Supreme Person to me. It will help me to more clearly hear and assimilate the transcendental message which leads to the most positive outcome.

If I follow the laws of society then I will avoid the consequences of breaking those laws, such as incarceration, fines, infamy, etc. If I follow the four regulative principles of spiritual life then I avoid the consequences of breaking these natural laws, such as increased future suffering, loss of intelligence, degradation of consciousness, passage to hellish planets, rebirth in a lower species of life.

Ignorance of a law, societal or natural, does not protect me from the punishment of breaking that law.

The four regulative principles of spiritual life are there to protect and purify my life as I progress on the transcendental path out of the material dimension.

Krishna says, “To those who are constantly devoted and worship Me with love, I give the understanding by which they can come to Me”. BG 10-10

If I reject His instruction to follow the four regulative principles (or other instructions), then I am not devoted to serving Him with love and I will not receive the understanding I need to come to Him.

These four regulative principles are steppingstones that I can cross easily as I follow the transcendental process of sadhana bhakti.
